Wintertime is here, and with that comes the opportunity to take part in plenty of fun activities, like enjoying a long drive to see your city’s Christmas lights.  While winter is a celebratory time, it is also when car accidents tend to increase worldwide. Dangerous winter conditions and difficult visibility can lead to serious or even fatal car accidents. To avoid finding yourself in this scary situation, you should keep certain safety tips in mind.

1) Get Your Car Prepared

If you live in an area prone to getting heavy snowfalls, make sure that your vehicle is ready to take on those conditions. You can do so by equipping your car with winter tires that have a better grip on a snowy road and are easier to handle. It’s also a good idea to visit a mechanic who can install new wiper blades and replace washer fluid with antifreeze.

2) Practice Safe Driving Techniques

Having to brake quickly on snow or ice can lead to slipping and sliding. To avoid this, increase the distance between you and the vehicle ahead of you, giving you more time to stop if needed. Additionally, settle for slower driving over faster driving. Don’t try to beat that red light or make any quick turns.

3) Use Your Best Judgment

Finally, use your best judgment when deciding whether to drive. Keep up with the local weather conditions and determine whether your trip is necessary or whether it can wait. If you are driving during a particularly bad snowfall, don’t be afraid to pull into the closest parking lot and take a breather. In the end, safe always beats sorry.
