Most people are afraid of plane crashes. But the fact is that more people are injured or die in car accidents than plane crashes. A plane crash kills many people at one go, so it attracts more attention. However, car crashes occur more frequently.
People Hardly Pay Attention to Car Accidents
How many times do you hear announcements on TV or the radio, telling you to take one route rather than another because there has been a crash or car accident? This is the only recognition people give to a car accident; they take a different route! Most of us don’t stop to think how many people may have been injured or died unless we know those people or those people are us.
Give Yourself Time to Get Where You’re Going
Given the frequency of car accidents, it’s necessary for people to be a lot more careful while driving. One thing you should be sure to do is give yourself enough time to get where you want to go. If you’re in a hurry or if you’re running late, then it stands to reason that your mind will be more occupied with getting to work or getting to your appointment on time. So you may not be as attentive as needed while driving.
Avoid Distractions While Driving
Don’t be distracted while driving. Obviously, you shouldn’t talk on the phone or check text messages. This is not the time to get up to date on your Instagram account, even if you’re waiting in traffic. It only takes a moment of distraction to cause a car accident. So avoid distractions as far as possible.
Even sticking in a hands-free accessory and having long conversations is less than ideal. Your hands may be free to grab the wheel but your mind is going to be occupied with something other than the traffic moving outside.
Don’t Drive Under the Influence of Alcohol
This ought to go without saying: don’t drive when you’re under the influence of alcohol. You may not have crossed the legal limit but that doesn’t stop your mind from being a little more blurry and a little less careful even if you’ve only had one drink.
