May 18, 2006: Florida Lawsuit Alleges Fosamax Linked to “Jaw Death”
A national class action lawsuit was filed against Merck and Company, the manufacturer of Fosamax, claiming that the company failed to warn Fosamax consumers that the medicine can cause Osteonecrosis of the Jaw or ONJ, or :jaw death.” ONJ is a medical condition where the jawbone partly crumbles and dies. The Class representative Linda Secrest claims that she used Fosamax for five years for treatment of osteoporosis, and was later diagnosed with ONJ last April 2005.
