A motorist driving up the Cajon Pass survived an unbelievable encounter with a semi tractor-trailer. The surreal scene unfolded after 3 p.m. on Wednesday, April 19.
Merging Semi Hits Car
According to ABC 7 News, a 34-year-old man was driving a red Nissan Maxima in a northbound lane of Interstate 5 north of Highway 138 when a slow-moving, merging 18-wheeler struck the vehicle. The Maxima got lodged under the left side of the semi’s trailer, which was loaded with about 25 tons of carrots.
Vehicle Dragged
The 62-year-old trucker was apparently unaware of the collision, and his big rig dragged the car up the interstate for about ¾ mile, according to the California Highway Patrol.
A motorist following in another vehicle caught the incident on his cell phone. The video showed the driver of the Maxima waving his arms out of a window. Eventually, a silver Scion sped alongside of the semi, and the driver pulled ahead of the semi to get the trucker to stop. The truck driver reportedly said he was completely unaware that his rig was dragging the passenger vehicle up the interstate.
No Serious Injuries
Although the Maxima was reportedly totaled, the driver did not suffer serious injuries. CHP troopers determined that the trucker was not impaired and that his log book was in order.
