Avoid a Crash: Tips for Driving in the Rain

avoid crash tips driving rain

Over one million car crashes each year are blamed on wet roads. Therefore you will want to be careful when driving in the rain. Consider the following tips to help prevent ending up in a car accident!

Car Maintenance

Keeping your car well maintained is one key to avoiding a crash. Before you head out on a rainy day make sure your windshield wipers are in working condition. If they appear cracked it is time to replace them. In addition, run a test by spraying the windshield washer. If the wipers leave streaks or require more than one swipe to clear the glass they are not adequate. In order to see out the windshield on a rainy day you need properly functioning wipers.

Check that your headlights, tail lights and brake lights are all operational so other cars can see you.

Verify your tires have the appropriate amount of tread by conducting the penny test. Stick a quarter in the tread upside down. If you can see above Washington’s head you need to replace your tires. Tire tread is required for traction.

Tire pressure is important as well. Check the tire pressure every month and compare to the manufacturer recommendation. Keep in mind that tire pressure will change with temperature changes.

Avoid Braking

If you brake hard on a wet road you may wind up skidding. If you are already in a skid you may want to brake but this is not advised. Instead remove your foot from the accelerator and steer in the direction you want the car to go.

Avoiding cruise control is recommended because often when driving with cruise control on you have to brake to disengage it. Since braking may result in loss of traction it is best to drive without cruise control on wet roads.

Avoid Hydroplaning

Hydroplaning occurs when the tires lose contact with the road because they are riding on a film of water. To avoid this situation slow down. In addition, avoid turning sharply. If you are approaching a turn brake first, then turn and then you can safely accelerate again.
