The California Office of Traffic Safety administers grants to local and state agencies to reduce traffic deaths and injuries to zero. To that end, the agency gathers collision statistics and ranks locations according to the population. Here’s what the latest compilation discovered for the top 13 cities in the state:
- With 4,042 total victims, San Francisco ranks fourth among traffic injuries and death.
- With 355 motorcyclists and 631 bicyclists killed or injured, the city ranked first for two-wheeled accidents.
- With 990 pedestrians killed or injured, the city also ranked first for pedestrian accidents. Of those victims, 114 were over 65, so the city also tops the list for senior-citizen incidents on foot.
- The most common types of collisions in which people were killed or injured were speed-related with 644 such injuries. San Francisco ranked second for accidents occurring between 9 PM and 2:59 AM.
- The city ranked last for accidents in which drivers under 21 were drinking at the time of the accident. It scored 10th for incidents where drunk drivers were between 21 and 34. A possible reason for the relatively low incidence of drinking-related collisions were the DUI arrests, which can occur before any accidents occur. The city ranks second for the number of such arrests.
Note that these accidents relate only to local city streets and do not include statistics for freeways or other thoroughfares in which the California Highway Patrol has jurisdiction.
