In a recent interview with NBC’s Today show, Caitlyn Jenner denied responsibility for the February crash that injured several people and killed an elderly woman, Kim Howe. California officials have reported that Jenner may be charged with vehicular manslaughter as a result of Howe’s death, a charge that could result in up to a year in prison.
In rendering the charge, Los Angeles County sheriffs indicated that Jenner’s vehicle was operated at a speed “unsafe for road conditions.” The SUV was part of a cascade of vehicles involved, but Jenner’s was the only one to cause a fatality, by sending Howe’s car into oncoming traffic.
The charge is the third for former Olympic athlete Jenner (known as Bruce at the time of the accident). The deceased woman’s family brought wrongful death charges earlier in the year, and another driver brought a personal injury claim this summer.
Although officials charged unsafe speed, Jenner was adamant that she was not speeding: “I was under the speed limit, I was going 46 [miles per hour] in a 50 [mile per hour zone]… I don’t think speed was [involved].” Further, she stated, “I’m in litigation and I can’t really talk about it, but a tragedy like this, you’ll never get over it. You just learn to live with it the best you possibly can.”
Jenner, who is transgender, said her attorney has requested that, if she is convicted, she not be placed in a woman’s prison.
