Why You Should Be More Afraid of a Car Crash Than a Plane Crash

Afraid of Car Crash Than Plane Crash

Many people are more afraid of flying in airplanes than they are of driving cars. First of all, it feels strange for a human being to be flying in the air as opposed to traveling on the ground. And secondly, whenever there is a plane crash, it is highly publicized, making the news everywhere. Plus a plane crash usually kills more people at one go.

However, according to USA Today, the odds of dying in a car crash are 1 in 98 for a lifetime while the odds of dying in a plane crash are 1 in 7,178 in a lifetime. So car crashes are far more likely than plane crashes. Here’s how you can avoid them:

  1. Don’t drink and drive: This should go without saying. However, there are still a number of people out there who attempt driving their cars after drinking. “It’s just a short distance,” they think. Or else they tell themselves that if they’re extra careful, nothing will happen. And nothing may happen the first or second time. But eventually, drinking and driving is going to increase your chances of a car crash.
  2. Don’t drive when emotional: You see this scene in movies all the time. A man and woman fight. The man walks out of the house and into his car in order to “blow off some steam.” Driving is not for blowing off steam. It’s for getting from point A to point B. When you’re feeling emotional, try talking to a friend on the phone. Or watch some TV. Do something innocuous, not something which might potentially have disastrous repercussions.
  3. Get your car serviced regularly: Make sure that your car is in good working order all the time. If something isn’t working, get it repaired or replaced. You don’t want to be driving down a highway just to realize that your brakes are malfunctioning. Taking good care of your car will help you to avoid a crash.
